Regional Economic Communities (RECs) are regional arrangements among groups of States where the freedom of movement and residence of individuals is facilitated significantly.
The swift movement of students, professionals and workers with varied skill sets and levels allows economies to be more competitive in a world characterized by progressive trade liberalization and increasing integration of economies.
The European Union (EU) can be considered one of the most advanced examples of this type of regional arrangement, while similar initiatives, particularly in combination with trade agreements, are increasing worldwide. Examples include the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Mercado Común del Sur (MERCOSUR).
